Santos Juliá was a historian singular. Arrived late at the office, after accumulating very different experiences and delving into sociology, and always held points of view, original on the issues that I was studying. Not belonged to a historiographical school any, much less a clientele college the use. Their work is enraizaban in a serious reading of the classics, from Karl Marx to Max Weber, a reading nothing dogmatic, that he fled from the face of the determinism, the stone that crushes historical interpretations, before socio-economic and now cultural. In his opinion, it was useless to search for a sense necessary in the discourse historical, or an ultimate cause to all phenomena, as only as possible explanations multicausales in which, by the way weberian, accounted for a leading role the subject, individual and collective, and the meaning that they themselves gave to their actions.
Dies Santos Juliá, the great historian of the TWENTIETH-century Spanish Historian of the complex Santos Juliá and THE COUNTRY
None of the themes that he tried to came out unscathed from her scrutiny, because his gaze was renewing a blow to the thesis place. He cultivated a political history of vast extent, in which there was room for both the analysis of social classes and their organizations, such as the portrait biography of the key characters in the Spanish crisis of the TWENTIETH century, the complex world socialist Manuel Azaña.
He attracted in particular to the speeches of the intellectuals, who helped him to understand the city of Madrid, the political projects of different periods or the advent of the Second Republic, in 1931, that she has spent unforgettable pages. Against the current, refuted with arguments and evidence topics such as the inevitability of the Civil War or the pact of forgetting in the Transition. In his last texts, he became interested even more so by the language and reflected, in one way or another, about the direction followed by their own generation, that of those spaniards born during the war or in the immediate post-war period they were able to talk about reconciliation and to converge after the dictatorship in a young democracy.
Historian from the social sciences and the man oblivious to the factions academic, he was however a firm advocate of the trade, of the value of their tools and of their conclusions. It cost him bitter controversies with fellow activists or with those who insisted on breaking down the boundaries between history and memory. Be historian implied, to Santos Juliá, try to understand the past from the remnants available, they do not become flag bearer of his lost causes.
The knowledge that was supporting each of their opinions, coupled with the brilliance of a language which is precise and fluid, with an authority rare among the researchers, that transferred without effort to your typical of comments on the political life. It is devastating to think that it is gone, now we can’t ask him what he thinks of this question or of that book. We just think, every time we face these difficulties that often confront historians, what I would have done it in our place.
